“The vaccine is made without growing the influenza virus in chicken eggs, which is the way that flu shots were made for more than four decades. Instead, Flucelvax is grown in kidney cells from dogs. The technology means that the shot can be made in less time than a traditional flu shot—enough virus can be churned out in about 65 hours to 75 hours, compared to the six months or so it takes to grow in chicken eggs. It also means that people who are allergic to eggs now have another option for getting immunized against the flu.”

“The governors of a number of states, including New York and New Jersey, recently imposed 21-day quarantines on health care workers returning to the United States from regions of the world where they may have cared for patients with Ebola virus disease. We understand their motivation for this policy — to protect the citizens of their states from contracting this often-fatal illness. This approach, however, is not scientifically based, is unfair and unwise, and will impede essential efforts to stop these awful outbreaks of Ebola disease at their source, which is the only satisfactory goal. The governors’ action is like driving a carpet tack with a sledgehammer: it gets the job done but overall is more destructive than beneficial.”

“Off British Summer Time and back on the old clock.  And by “old” I mean 1850 or thereabouts.  Greenwich Mean Time, which is Zulu Time and generally Coordinated Universal Time, which means that the British invented time across the universe.  Don’t argue.  The British invented time and you have to just sit there and like it.  We also invented sleep.  Previous to our invention of time, sleep in Britain was generally sectional.  People would go to sleep after the sun set — “first sleep” — and then wake up in the middle of the night for an hour or two.  We’d potter around, visit the neighbours, read, shag.  And then return to bed for “second sleep,” which lasted until sunrise.  Sectional sleep was killed by industrialisation and the spread of streetlighting, which reached its critical mass around the point that GMT was established.  It’s odd to think of sleep as we know it as a modern invention.  We are a terrible destructive people and it’s no wonder nobody likes us.”

“I was always fascinated with rangoli designs and I really wanted to try it out,” says Kuala Lumpur artist Haris Rashid (@harisrashid) reflecting on the experience of creating his first rangoli for a local shopping mall during the annual Hindu holiday of Diwali (or Deepavali), which is observed this week. Many who celebrate the holiday create rangoli with colored rice, flower petals, and other materials on streets and the floors inside homes to bring good luck, and is an essential decorative tradition for this festival of lights. For this particular project, Haris extensively researched the art form and even colored his own rice. “I wanted to make something unique while still keeping the vibe of Deepavali, so I chose a peacock and incorporated my artistic style. It took me three days to finish, but it was a lot of fun!” For more rangoli photos and videos, browse the #rangoli hashtag.

“Eko Devices has developed a Bluetooth-enabled attachment for your stethoscope that captures high quality recordings of auscultated heart sounds. These sounds are then transferred automatically to the cloud, via a connected smartphone or tablet, where the acoustic pattern is compared to a library of over 30,000 heart sounds to identify the most likely cause of an abnormality. On the connected mobile device, the user can both re-listen to the heart sounds and also review the acoustic signal.”

"At an early brewery site in Skara Brae, Scotland, archaeologists found residue of a beer made with..."

At an early brewery site in Skara Brae, Scotland, archaeologists found residue of a beer made with henbane, hemlock, meadowsweet, and nightshade. Henbane could also produce a feeling of flight, and was a common component in witches’ flying potions. Nightshade, or Belladonna, causes delirious hallucinations. It was also used during the Inquisition to torture some of those same potion-wielding witches into confessing.

Beer could be even more potent than that. Ergot, for example, is powerful stuff. Some Nordic brewers were fond of a parasitic fungus called Claviceps purpurea, or ergot, that grew on rotted barley and rye. Archaeologists have found its tell-tale bloated purplish grains in the guts of buried bog bodies. The fungus shares some of the same chemical compounds as LSD, which can yield wild hallucinations and ecstatic dancing. Doctors call it “convulsive ergotism.” The bad side known as, “gangrenous ergotism,” causes abdominal pain, convulsions, a sensation of burning limbs called St. Anthony’s Fire and, ultimately, death.

The Knick is about a lot of sexy things: there’s cocaine addiction, back-alley cadaver deals, and actual sex. But it’s also full of real-world historical science. The discoveries, the inventions, even the cocaine addiction, are real—a fact that can be both fascinating and horrifying.

Take, for example, “Thackery’s point”—the location Dr. John Thackery (Clive Owen) finds that allows him to safely perform an appendectomy. It wasn’t discovered by the show’s fictitious main character, but it was located by Charles McBurney in roughly the same time period as the show. (It’s still known as “McBurney’s point.”) That crazy nose reconstruction (above) Thackery does for a woman who loses part of her snout to syphilis? That was also a common treatment at the time, having been invented in Italy during the Renaissance and used for years thereafter. The early 1900s, as The Knick shows, was also when X-rays were coming into common usage. (However, people didn’t entirely understand that long-term exposure to radiation could kill you.)

“Breakfast for a child in Burkina Faso, for example, might well include millet-seed porridge; in Japan, rice and a putrid soybean goop known as natto; in Jamaica, a mush of plantains or peanuts or cornmeal; in New Zealand, toast covered with Vegemite, a salty paste made of brewer’s yeast; and in China, jook, a rice gruel topped with pickled tofu, strings of dried meat or egg. In Cuba, Brazil and elsewhere in Latin America, it is not uncommon to find very young children sipping coffee with milk in the mornings. In Pakistan, kids often take their milk with Rooh Afza, a bright red syrup made from fruits, flowers and herbs. Swedish filmjolk is one of dozens of iterations of soured milk found on breakfast tables across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. For a child in southern India, the day might start with a steamed cake made from fermented lentils and rice called idli. “The idea that children should have bland, sweet food is a very industrial presumption,” says Krishnendu Ray, a professor of food studies at New York University who grew up in India. “In many parts of the world, breakfast is tepid, sour, fermented and savory.””

One morning in March, when the first case arrived at the Liberian unit of Japan’s Bridgestone Corp. , managers sat around a rubber-tree table and googled “Ebola,” said Ed Garcia, president of Firestone Natural Rubber Company LLC. Then they built two Ebola isolation clinics, using shipping containers and plastic wrap. They trained their janitors how to bury Ebola corpses. Their agricultural surveyors mapped the virus as it spread house to house, and teachers at the company’s schools went door-to-door to explain the disease.

“It was like flying an airplane and reading the manual at the same time,” said Philippines-born Mr. Garcia, who runs this 185-square-mile stretch of rubber trees.
