As a result of the genocide in Rwanda, hundreds of thousands of Rwandans sought refuge in camps in neighbouringTanzania from May 1994 onwards.
MSF took responsibility for the Benaco and Musuhura camps in Ngara District, housing some 260,000 and 80,000 refugees respectively.
Medical and sanitation teams battled the drastic medical and humanitarian situation as a dysentery epidemic swept through the camps killing many. MSF immediately set up medical and food facilities; started feeding centres, ensured a safe drinking water supply and provided sanitary facilities.
