“After working several decades as a #coal miner, Patrick Lawson has paid off the mortgage on his trailer home. He’s proud of his antique glassware collection and the modest savings he once hoped he could live on after a few more years of work. But ad a result of his work, Patrick has lost parts of several fingers and much of his hearing, and is now facing shoulder surgery. He believes his career options after his job ends at the Camp Creek mine in #WestVirginia in a few weeks are pretty limited. “I may be working somewhere for minimum wage before it’s over,” he said. “I don’t think the coal industry will ever be back to what it was.” There is pain across the nation’s coal fields, but things are particularly tough in West Virginia, where mines are closing almost every month. @howdyluke photographed Patrick and other miners on #nytassignment.” By nytimes on Instagram.
