The turtles were sent away while the @nyaquarium was constructed at Coney Island, where their handlers worked. The photographer Arthur Brower shot their happy return to the city. The elderly pair had traveled first-class, “in keeping with their position,” @nytimes reported. They “lounged comfortably on moist burlap, the turtle equivalent of deep Oriental rugs. Periodically, attendants would stop by and solicitously squeeze cool water on them.” We’re sharing photos of seafaring animals like Sloe and Moe from the @nytimes #archives for #nytweekender. #🐢🐢” By nytimes on Instagram.
