“#MSF emergency coordinator Will Turner helps women and children aboard the MY Phoenix.
On 6 August, The Bourbon Argos and the MY Phoenix (run jointly with MOAS) worked together with the Italian coast guard to complete the most complex and dangerous rescue so far. The boat was extremely overcrowded and listing from side to side. The only way to stabilize it was to have those who could swim to jump into the water and hold on to large flotation devices deployed by the MY Phoenix. Everyone was extremely relieved when the 604 people were bought on board the boats safely (289 on the MY Phoenix and 315 on the Bourbon Argos). Later that night, all 604 people were transferred to a Norwegian ship, the Siem Pilot for safe passage to Italy.” By doctorswithoutborders on Instagram.
