"The #climate deal being negotiated in France is meant to begin a transformation of the world's energy systems. But it has another goal that has received less attention: a sweeping effort to save forests. #Forests are both a potential cause of global warming and a potential solution. While healthy forests suck carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, forest destruction throws enormous amounts of CO2 back into the air. The warming and drying of the climate may in itself kill forests, as is already occurring in the United States and elsewhere. In September, the photographer @nickcotephoto captured an area the Santa Fe National Forest in New Mexico, pictured here, where a 2011 blaze ultimately burned 150,000 acres." By nytimes on Instagram.
