"Floodwater surrounding an abandoned farmhouse in Old #Valmeyer, Illinois. This little town on the Mississippi River nearly drowned in the Great Flood of 1993. Houses filled with 16 feet of muddy water. Streets disintegrated and washed away. After surveying the wreckage, Valmeyer's 900 residents vowed that they wouldn't let it happen again. So they picked up their town and moved, abandoning the rich riverfront plains and remaking their 80-year-old town on a bluff, a mile and a half east. On higher ground, they have been safe from the swelling Mississippi. There is just one problem: They're homesick for the old town on the water. @kilebrewer photographed Valmeyer — both old and new — while on #nytassignment." By nytimes on Instagram.
