"In the film "The Lady in the Van," written by the playwright Alan Bennett, Maggie Smith has reprised the role of a cantankerous homeless woman she played onstage years ago. Both Maggie and Alan are 81, and both have achieved the status of National Treasures in Britain. ("Oh for heaven's sake," said the actress, who flapped her hands in horror at the suggestion made by @nytimes reporter Roslyn Sulcas.) The character Maggie plays took up residence in a van in Alan's driveway. For 15 years. "It was a change from all those hats and clothes in 'Downton,'" Maggie said dryly. "You can't be in the least bit vain." Maggie has been nominated for a @goldenglobes award for her performance and has gathered some Oscar buzz. @tom__jamieson photographed #MaggieSmith in London in December while on #nytassignment.
