"Tensions between Afghans and Syrians have been simmering at an overcrowded detention camp for migrants on the Greek island of Chios. Last Friday, nearly 1,000 people tangled during a brawl that stretched on for 6 hours. It ended after about 800 people broke out of the detention center and marched in protest to the main port of the vacation destination. Until recently, Afghans and Syrians were among the groups considered eligible for asylum. But in February, governments reclassified Afghans as economic migrants, dimming their chances of being able to stay in Europe legally. The seemingly arbitrary division has roused incomprehension and bitterness among an estimated 13,000 Afghans stuck in #Greece. The @nytimes staff photographer Tyler Hicks took this photo on Tuesday.
