"Supporters waited for Evo Morales, the president of Bolivia, to pass by last week in Sica Sica, a town in an indigenous region. A nationwide referendum to allow the president to seek a 4th term was recently defeated. President Morales is not alone. Other Latin American leftists have suddenly felt their longevity ebb as a tide rises against them. But is the wave of discontent a rejection of the left? Or is it something more personal, aimed at the outsize leaders themselves, not necessarily at the ideas they have promoted? The photographer @meridithkohut took this photo while on #nytassignment." "The marquee at the @apollotheater said it all: "She's home. Aretha Franklin." In June 1971, the Queen of Soul, then 29, was performing in Harlem. The @nytimes sent the reporter C. Gerald Fraser — one of only 2 black reporters on staff when he was hired — to cover the show. "The thousands of black people who saw and heard Miss Franklin were more than an audience," Gerry wrote. "They were part of a black interaction — they came not only to see and hear 'Lady Soul,' 'Soul Sister No. 1,' 'The Queen of Soul' and all those other labels she bears, but also to participate with her in an exultation of their blackness." Backstage, the @nytimes photographer Tyrone Dukes photographed #ArethaFranklin speaking to reporters.

Here, the @nytimes staff photographer @Meyer Liebowitz captured Shirley looking resolute while working as a census taker.
